Canvas
Canvas is the Learning Management System (LMS) that most online courses use at BHC. The Canvas Student Guide (see also: Canvas Overview Video Links to an external site. & Canvas Video Guides Links to an external site.) is a great resource that offers great overviews, notes, and step-by-steps with screenshots, example: How do I view annotation feedback comments from my instructor directly in my assignment submission? Links to an external site.. When in Canvas you may click the Help button to the bottom-left and then "Search the Canvas Guides". For the "Canvas Apps" click the hamburger menu to the top-left and click on Help. If you have a BHC Canvas account, you can try the Canvas tools in this Online Learning Orientation course.
Not all BHC courses use Canvas, but Login information is on the next tab. If your course is not using Canvas, but something else, your instructor will provide you with instructions on how to access the course content.

Non-BHC Students
Each semester, students from other Illinois community colleges enroll in online classes at Black Hawk College through OCE, which is a service created by a consortium (ILCCO Links to an external site.) of around 23 community colleges willing to share their online courses with each other. If you have registered for a course through your local community college, but are actually enrolled in the class at BHC, this page is designed to assist you in taking that online class.
Online Learning Orientation
If you have a myBHC account (BHC Students) or you are registered with Canvas (Non-BHC ICE Student or Guests) you will be able to join our Online Learning Orientation and submit practice assignments, post discussions, and take practice tests to help familiarize yourself with our Learning Management System.
Guest Login
These tutorials are for users other than Black Hawk students and students from other community colleges and provides step-by-step instructions on how to create a guest login for Canvas.
Computer Skills
What some help with computer skills? Check out the Computer skills page in the Online Learning Orientation.
Videos
- Videos uploaded to Canvas must be less than 500 MB.
- Submitting a video to an Assignment does not count towards your ~52.4 MB of personal file space*. If posting videos to a discussion, don't upload videos to your Files tool. Rather, embed videos to discussions; see
- How do I upload and embed a media file from my computer in the Rich Content Editor as a student? Links to an external site. .
- Recording video using the Rich Content Editor Links to an external site..
- You could try using the Panopto Video icon.
- If you don't see what looks like a green "recycle" button, click the three vertical dots. Use Panopto Video
-
Then click Record > Capture (Browser).
-
Then choose your audio and video sources.
- If you don't see what looks like a green "recycle" button, click the three vertical dots. Use Panopto Video
*Uploading files as an attachment to discussions or Inbox will however. To see how much room you have click on your Canvas Account icon towards the top-left corner of Canvas (under the BHC logo) and then click Files. You should see the percent of space being used and it will also show you how many MB out of ~52.4 (Personal). In some cases, Canvas may allow a little bit over 100%, but if it is going to go beyond a little bit, you will have problems.

Time Zones
Most students live in the Central Standard Time (CST) zone and so the default time zone for courses will be CST. If your first access to BHC's Canvas LMS is outside of the CST, Canvas will most likely default to the time zone you are currently in. If you move into our outside of the CST zone or are traveling, use this time zone Canvas guide Links to an external site. to change your time zone. Don't forget to change it each time you are in a different time zone.
