Black Hawk College’s Online Learning Orientation [OLO] is designed for students who are new to online learning and Canvas. This orientation will also help students who are not taking on an online class to become more familiar with the Canvas Learning Management System (Module III). This orientation will help you become acquainted with online learning and what you need to know and do to be successful at it. OLO consists of five learning modules. To fully interact and complete this orientation you will need to log in with a myBlackHawk user name and password and self-enroll. We recommend you start with Module 1: Introduction, and then move to the other three in whatever order you wish. A fifth module will become available after you successfully complete all four learning module quizzes with a score of 60% or higher for each. There is a sixth module called Other Resources that has links to: Technical Requirements , Tutorials and Troubleshooting.

This orientation is not mandatory and there are no online courses that have this as a pre-requisite in order for you to enroll. This is a self paced course you may do on your own. You have the ability to interact with other students and the instructor. The instructor will attempt to reply within 24 hours on business days. Ultimately it is up to you as a student to determine if you would be successful when taking an online course. Drop out rates are higher in online courses. If you are unable to successfully complete this orientation, online courses might not be the ideal course type for you.

There are a few hands on activities that will allow you to practice using the various tools. Feedback for quizzes will primarily be in the form of showing you the correct answers with feedback after three attempts. Grades are used only as a tool to measure how well students are doing and what is being completed. We will also ask for your feedback on the orientation once you complete it. As we get feedback we will update this orientation. Any significant content changes will be added to the Announcements tool.
